For Dearfoams president Justine Suh, building supportive coalitions of female leaders, mentors and mentees is essential to overcoming challenges and achieving success.
“Women face unique obstacles, particularly in male-dominated industries, and I’ve been fortunate to learn resilience and confidence from mentors who encouraged me to embrace my authority and ambition,” the executive who just joined the brand in January from Carter’s, told FN. “I strive to create environments where women uplift one another, forming a ‘sisterhood’ in business that drives collective success and empowers the next generation of leaders to thrive.”
Suh added that having attended an all-women’s college instilled a “deep responsibility” to open doors for other women. “I believe in the transformative power of women to lead and drive change and am passionate about helping them recognize their potential,” she said.
As for the notion that some women don’t do enough to support each other, Suh believes that is more of a myth. “In fact, many women actively support one another in both personal and professional contexts,” Suh noted. “However, it’s also true that women, like any group, can face societal and professional pressures that may sometimes make it difficult to collaborate or support each other as much as we should.
The executive added that these challenges might stem from competition, limited resources, or the need to constantly prove themselves in male-dominated environments.
“But, despite these obstacles, many women are creating strong, supportive networks to lift each other up, whether through formal mentorship programs, peer support, or advocacy for equal opportunities,” Suh added. “So, while there are challenges, the narrative that women don’t support each other often overlooks the many ways they are actively fostering solidarity and success together.
