Soccer nostalgists are in for a serious treat, as one of Nike’s most iconic football boots is being transformed for wear off the pitch.
The Nike Total 90 3 “Metallic Silver” ushers in the revival of the 2004 cleat. Gone are the studs, and in their place comes a flat rubber sole to help the shoe do double-duty catering for both the blokecore and low-profile sneaker trends. Make that tripe-duty, in fact, with the prominence of silver synthetic leather throughout sneakers.
The upper remains largely unchanged from the original cleat, which was at first controversial for eliminating the folded tongue and situating the laces asymmetrically. The quilted toe still channels the latitudinal lines of the globe, while the signature “90” circle mark sits on the sneaker’s medial side.
“Metallic Silver” is the only colorway with a confirmed release date at the moment, but Nike has officially revealed that gold, black, burgundy and orange variants will drop at some point during the spring-summer season.
Ronaldinho, Wayne Rooney and Luis Figo are just some of the players who wore the Total 90 on the pitch, with the latter player starring alongside both the Brazilian and Portuguese Ronaldos in the renowned “Portugal vs. Brazil” commercial.
Technically, Nike is referring to the sneaker simply as the “Total 90,” but “Total 90 III” branding remains on the tongue.
The Nike Total 90 3 “Metallic Silver” will release March 1 through the Snkrs app and select third-party retailers. Pricing is set at $110.
