Janelle Monáe was an honoree, not a performer, at the Costume Designers Guild Awards (CDGA) in Los Angeles last night, but she put on a show.
She hammed it up for the cameras as she played with the angles of her checkered skirt suit with comically pointy shoulders from Viktor & Rolf fall 2024. She brought the campy look down to earth with shiny black patent leather loafers paired with white ankle socks.

The sleek shoes are very on-trend yet classic, with an approximately two-inch heel and smooth patent leather.
Patent leather is leather that has been glazed or polished to withstand water. The name comes from the fact that the process of creating patent leather was recognized by the British patent office in the late 1700s. Commonly used in dress shoes and heels, patent leather today is sometimes coated with polyurethane.
The “Make Me Feel” singer pairs her fantastical and playful fashion with sleek and stylish footwear, from loafers adorned with hearts and boots with flowers on her “Age of Pleasure” tour, and designer heels, pointed-toe pumps and heeled boots to coordinate her statement looks.
Monáe, who is non-binary and uses both she/her and they/them pronouns, always has fun with fashion. She often wears stylish, unique suits as well as fantastical, campy getups, exemplified by her custom Picasso-inspired Christian Siriano dress at the 2019 Met Gala. Thus, the mind-melting triangular blazer—complete with a droopy lavender bowtie—and coordinating checkered miniskirt from the Viktor & Rolf fall 2024 runway were a perfect choice for her to receive the Vanguard Spotlight Award in at CDGA 2025.
The Costume Designers Guild describes their new Vanguard Spotlight Award as “a tribute to a performing artist who sets new standards in their arena, not only for their outstanding achievements but also for their courage as a visionary that serves as an inspiration to us all.” The organization debuted the award last year, presenting it to Billie Eilish.
“Monáe has established themself as an icon in every medium they have entered throughout their career, making their mark on music, acting, and fashion. Their bold, distinct style has made them a standout, whether on stage or on the red carpet. This year’s Costume Designers Guild Vanguard Spotlight Award honors their distinct style vision,” CDG continues.
The CDGA took place on Thursday at LOCATION and was also attended by Quinta Brunson, Kate Beckinsale, Kathryn Hahn, Mindy Kaling and other celebrities. Lisy Christi won for costuming “Conclave,” Linda Muir for “Nosferatu” and Paul Tazewell for “Wicked.”
