It’s been just over a month since the Nike SB Dunk Low “Wizard of Oz” released, but it’s taken until now for the sneaker’s big secret to be revealed.
A special “Ruby Slipper” edition of the sneaker was discovered by a lucky customer in South Carolina. Each pair of the SB Dunks came in a “blind bag” requiring it to be unsealed to reveal the sneaker inside, which had led many to believe Nike had a trick up its sleeve. And because Bluetile Skateboards, a shop in Columbia, South Carolina, received its shipment late, that secret wasn’t discovered until Thursday.
The alternate version of the SB Dunk Low “Wizard of Oz” is covered in red sequins to replicate the film’s iconic footwear. Not only that, but a flash effect is created at the toe with the coloring of the sequins as a nod to the Wicked Witch of the West being shocked when trying to steal the slippers. “Surrender Dorothy” is then printed on a second insole beneath another showing the slippers to replicate the warning traced in the sky by the Wicked Witch of the West.
Bluetile owner David Toole unboxed the sneakers on his YouTube channel, and their owner decided to remain anonymous, less anyone discover the possible jackpot they chanced into. As of now, this is the only such appearance for the special-edition of the sneaker, but it’s possible more are out there waiting to be torn out of their bags.
The regular edition of the “Wizard of Oz” SB Dunk features a wearaway upper with an all-over print poppy field on the upper layer and ruby red beneath. This secondary layer doesn’t quite have the same glam as the sequined edition that’s now surfaced.
The Nike SB Dunk Low “Wizard of Oz” released December 23, but it may be worth checking in with you local skate shop to see if it also received a late shipment. Resale prices also aren’t much higher than the original $135 tag.
