Gabrielle Union demonstrated how to breathe life into NYC winter dressing in cherry-colored peep-toe mules to promote her latest film on “Today with Jenna & Friends.”
The actor added a fresh pop of color to a fitted grey sleeveless knit midi dress and dark brown suede trench with deep red leather mules. She appeared to be wearing the Jude Date Mule in Red Leather, which retails for $470. The trendy shoes featured a key-hole peep-toe, round toe and an approximately four-inch sculpted heel. She completed casually chic look with an extra-long ponytail and natural, glowy makeup.
Mules, which are essentially backless shoes, are very on-trend at the moment, especially with kitten or block heels, as well as a wide variety of flat styles. Mules often feature the trendy toe shape of the moment, so many current ones feature open pointed-toes or open square-toes.
Mules were first popularized in the 17th century as bedroom slippers, later becoming fashionable thanks to wealthy women in the French court. The shoe variety reemerged in the 1950s, with stars like Marilyn Monroe favoring the style — especially the more modern open-toe style. Mules recently saw a bump in popularity in the 2010s, and again in 2024.
Union’s style is bold, glamorous and rather chameleonic; she never shies away from a bold color or design or daring cutout. When it comes to her footwear style, she tends to opt for statement heels that coordinate with her outfit, or simple styles that let the rest of the look do the talking.
On and off the red carpet, Union can usually be found wearing sandals by Magda Butrym, By Far and Gia Couture’s collaboration with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. She’s also likes shoes from Paris Texas, Tamara Mellon and Tabitha Simmons. While off-duty, Union tends to opt for sneakers by Adidas, Reebok or Nike.
Union sat down with Jenna Bush Hager today to tease her new movie, “Riff Raff.” During the interview, she also discussed her youngest daughter “out-Scorpio-ing” her, her experience with IVF and her husband Dwyane Wade’s 2023 cancer diagnosis.
She stars in the Dito Montiel-directed dark comedy alongside Jennifer Coolidge, Pete Davidson, Ed Harris and Bill Murray. The film will be released to theaters on Friday.
